Frank Lloyd Wright
(1867-1959)

American Architect

birthdate: June 8
birthplace:
Richland Center, Wisconsin

Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the most famous architects of all time. His original and creative ideas revolutionized architecture in the 20th century. Through his architecture he sought to reflect the "American democratic experience." He believed in using materials native to the building's location and his designs broke away from rigid traditional layout designs to create an open feeling with rooms that flowed into each other. Frank Lloyd Wright led a colorful life and was outspoken in his vision of a fairer, freer world. Spirituality was an important cornerstone of his life -- he was a Unitarian and transcendentalist, believing like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau that we all have a spiritual existence that transcends the physical body and rational mind that can be experienced through an individual's intuition without the need for the rigid structures of established religions.
